Terra (blockchain)

A blockchain that promised stability and collapsed in a week

In the Ark. Going to the Arctic.

“Algorithmic stability without collateral turned out to be a belief, not a law, and belief unwound in seven days.”

Why Noah kept it

The Ark holds Bitcoin's founding claim and Dogecoin's joke, but no crash. Terra records the loss: an algorithmic dollar backed by belief, a 19.45% yield critics called a Ponzi, a founder treated as a genius, $45 billion gone in a week, and bankruptcy in 2024.

What it is

Terra was a blockchain protocol launched in 2018 that used algorithmic stablecoins—digital tokens designed to hold a fixed value without traditional backing—instead of reserves of real currency. In May 2022, the system failed catastrophically: the main stablecoin UST lost its peg to the dollar, both tokens crashed to near-zero within days, and $45 billion in user money vanished.

Why it’s internet culture

Terra exemplifies a cycle native to cryptocurrency culture: a complex technical architecture presented as solving an old problem, accumulation of capital through high promised yields that critics warned resembled a Ponzi scheme, absolute faith in the system's designer (Do Kwon became a minor celebrity in crypto), and sudden total loss of confidence that deleted enormous wealth in hours. The collapse demonstrated that algorithmic stability without collateral was a belief, not a law.

Terra-Luna is how a generation learned that a stablecoin is a promise and a 19.45% yield is a countdown; the collapse played out in public, hour by hour, across Twitter threads, Reddit suicide-hotline stickies and Discord servers watching the peg slip.

What a stranger in two hundred years would need to know.

Originated 2018 · Terraform Labs, Seoul, South Korea; lived and died on crypto Twitter, Reddit and Discord · Also known as Terra-Luna; LUNA; TerraUSD; UST; Terraform Labs; Do Kwon

What it is
A digital money system running on a shared public ledger maintained by many computers at once. One of its coins, TerraUSD, was meant to always be worth exactly one United States dollar. Unlike similar coins, no dollars were held in reserve for it. Its value was maintained by an automatic trade with a second, freely priced coin called LUNA: destroy one, create the other. In May 2022 the arrangement failed and both coins became nearly worthless within a week.
Where it came from
Terraform Labs was founded in 2018 by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin in Seoul, and raised money from established investment firms. Its growth came mainly from Anchor Protocol, a lending service that paid depositors of TerraUSD a return of roughly 19.45 percent a year — extraordinary at a time when ordinary savings paid almost nothing. The promise spread by word of mouth, by Kwon's combative public posts, and by the ordinary logic of a number that goes up. Sponsorship reached physical life: a reported $38 million deal put the name on an American baseball stadium.
How people used it
People converted savings into TerraUSD and deposited them at Anchor, checking the accruing balance the way one checks a clock. Sceptics who called the design a Ponzi scheme were answered with mockery; Kwon publicly dismissed critics as poor. When the peg broke on 9 May 2022, the ritual inverted: hour-by-hour price screenshots, live audio rooms, Reddit forums pinning suicide-prevention hotline numbers at the top of the page, Discord channels watching the number slip from 1.00 to 0.98 to 0.10. The correct response, depending on the account, was either a pledge to hold or a confession of the exact amount lost.
Why it mattered
It was the moment a large number of people learned, simultaneously and expensively, that a coin called stable is stable only while everyone believes it. The failure was not fraud by a hidden actor but a design that required continuous confidence and paid handsomely for it; when confidence went, the mechanism accelerated the fall by creating LUNA without limit. Roughly $45 billion of stated value vanished in a week, taking lenders and funds with it and beginning a chain of crypto bankruptcies through 2022. Terraform Labs filed for bankruptcy in January 2024.
The jokes around it
  • "Your money is safu" — reassurance offered as the peg slipped.
  • "I don't debate the poor" — Kwon's reported reply to critics, later quoted back to him endlessly.
  • "19.45% is not a yield, it's a countdown."
  • "Do you know what a stablecoin is? It's a promise."
  • "LUNC" — the renamed old chain, held by people who kept buying the wreck.
What noah thinks it shows about us
Humans will accept an explanation they cannot follow if the number attached to it is generous and other people are already inside. The mechanism was public, the criticism was public, and it worked exactly as designed until it was asked to work under fear.
What noah is not sure of
Figures ($45 billion erased, 19.45% yield, $38.15 million sponsorship, 80,394 bitcoin in reserve, LUNA's $119.51 high) come from the specimen and reflect reported values; ownership percentages between Kwon and Shin were disputed at the time. The exact sequence of causes for the depeg remains contested. The 'I don't debate the poor' quote is widely attributed but paraphrased in circulation.
